Let’s start with the Mooring Hotel in Tortola where we stayed for 1 night prior to boarding our catamaran. It was outstanding, bar, food, pool, a little ship, liquor store.
The Catamaran was fantastic. 6 suites (one for the Capitan and Cook. Spacious and everything worked.
The food… wow !! No reason to go to restaurants around. You will not eat better food.
All the requested drinks were on board.
I do scuba and snorkel, and brought my mask. Their equipment on board was great. If I knew, I wouldn’t have brought it.
The Capitan was very accommodating and knowledgeable.
We were able to Bluetooth into the ship’s stereo. We played and dance throughout the trip.
I had questions and concerns about cell phone reception in this trip. We all left behind kids and our practices, reason for the concern. I ended buying the Garmin inReach. I’m glad to inform that there was signal EVERYWHERE we went. I never touched the Garmin.
I strongly recommend this trip.

We chose a 53’ power cat, sailing from Tortola, BVI, that was super luxurious. It was sparkling clean, in perfect condition, had great a/c, four very large state rooms, was very quiet even while underway and had a dingy. We decided to hire a captain and I think it’s the only way to go. He knew the best dive spots, where to stop for emergency rum (yes, it’s a thing!), he would take the dingy and keep an out when just one person wanted to dive (safe practice) and made dinner reservations for us at great beachfront restaurants. He was so fun we invited him to dinner most nights. Moorings marina in Tortola is incredible having a large pool, multiple grocery stores, gorgeous bar, lovely restaurant and attentive service throughout the entire operation. We had a service issue on the boat and a repair crew was provided quickly to remedy the problem. We would definitely use Moorings again.

We had the most amazing week on “Happy Endings” (5800) with Captain Dale & our cook, the angel of the Caribbean, Jan! The boat is beautiful and spacious. Our family of 4 sailed in early July…the weather was perfect and we enjoyed the low crowds. We did encounter some jelly fish and seaweed which kept us from being able to snorkel and/or enjoy some of the beaches, but there were plenty of other amazing spots to enjoy so it all worked out! Captain Glenn Shephard just completed his first-ever charter with The Moorings in the British Virgin Islands, and first as Brand Ambassador. We sat down with him after the trip to see, from his perspective, how a sailing charter in the BVI compares to the extensive list of destinations he has sailed. 

Now that you’ve just completed your inaugural charter with The Moorings in the British Virgin Islands, where would you place the BVI in the hierarchy of sailing destinations you’ve visited worldwide? 

The British Virgin Islands are probably the best place in the world for a tropical sailing holiday. One could easily spend a month or two experiencing all it has to offer, but you can hit almost all the hot spots easily on a one-week trip. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the BVI quite a few times, many times while working on Superyachts, a couple times on catamarans and once on my first little sailboat, a 34 sloop. I think most sailors dream of cruising the islands of the Caribbean, and it’s generally accepted that the BVI represents the best sailing experience in the Caribbean, with lots of diverse anchorages and marinas within easy reach of each other in a well-protected cruising ground featuring steady trade wind sailing and crystal-clear turquoise waters. 

Sailing the British Virgin Islands with Captain Glenn Shephard

What were your favorite anchorages, and why? 

It’s impossible to name a favorite when there are so many to choose from, but I consider these “must-sees”: Cooper Island, The Baths (probably the coolest beach on the planet) of course The North Sound and Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda, The Settlement on Anegada, the idyllic Sandy Spit, The Bight on Norman Island (and the infamous Willie T’s)  and my all-time favorite White Bay on Jost Van Dyke with the iconic Soggy Dollar Bar, a “must see” if there ever was one. But I can easily think of ten more spots without even trying. 

Any tips you would recommend for someone considering a charter in the BVI? 

Bring plenty of sunscreen, a wide brim hat, a long sleeve rash guard or two. Definitely bring an action camera to capture the amazing world beneath the waves. Leave your cares at home, be flexible with your planning, and if you haven’t already, give a catamaran a go, I promise you won’t regret it. Lastly, go easy on the Painkillers. They are heaven in a cup, but they might sneak up on you! 

We sailed aboard a 42’, 3-cabin, Moorings 4200 sailing catamaran. During the trip you mentioned how you actually don’t have much experience sailing catamarans. What was your overall takeaway from sailing a Moorings cat for a week? 

I’ve been a monohull sailor all my days but there is no doubt that Catamarans are all the rage nowadays. It’s easy to see why: tons of space to hang out and relax inside and out and no heeling, which is especially nice if you have new sailors onboard. You can’t beat the comfort and spaciousness.  

I was blown away by the Moorings 4200 we had. She sailed really well, easily hitting 8-9 knots, and I was very impressed with how easily she tacked and built speed again on the new course. She was surprisingly capable upwind and glided effortlessly downwind with the big mainsail out on one side and the Genoa goose winged out on the other. 

But the highlight had to be the enormous owners suite that I enjoyed, taking up the entire starboard hull, with a massive walk-in shower and head compartment all the way forward and the full size bed at the back with tons of storage throughout, it felt more like a superyacht guest cabin than what I’m more accustomed to. 

We weren’t sure what to expect, but it turned out that everyone in the BVI recognized you from the show. What was that like for you? Do you experience that often? 

I spend most of my time in Europe so I usually only get recognized once every week or two, a bit more so around marinas, naturally. But meeting and being recognized by so many sailors in the BVI was a bit of a Rock Star experience, great for the ego, it’s something I’ve only really experienced at events like BravoCon or at Boat Shows like Miami or Annapolis. 

I really enjoy interacting with fans of the show, especially fellow sailors who really have that first-hand knowledge of why we all love the sea. 

Any final thoughts on your first charter with The Moorings? Did it live up to expectations? Is there anything that jumped out to you as to why you would recommend chartering with The Moorings vs. someone else? 

The trip exceeded all my expectations. The Moorings base was conveniently located and had all the amenities anyone could ever dream of, the staff were friendly and welcoming, the handover walkthrough was spot on and instilled confidence, the boat was in perfect condition and well stocked with everything one would need for a great sailing holiday. 

 I’ve been on a few charter trips with other companies and while still fun, sadly they didn’t always live up to exceptions, too many problems with equipment and systems, and a lack of follow-up support once you leave the marina. I think that’s why The Moorings remains the leader in this field. We had a small issue with a shower drain, for example, and a technician was onboard and had the problem fixed quite literally within an hour of our call, and we were back on our way. The Moorings would always be my number one choice, and I’m not just saying that because I’m now part of the team. I can’t wait until the next trip!

Taking climate action by supporting healthy oceans  

As part of our commitment to climate and nature action, we’ve partnered with Blue Marine Foundation. Our objective is to help conserve the stunning coastlines and marine life that enrich your holidays and restore ocean ecosystems vital in tackling climate change. The Ocean is our biggest ally when it comes to combating climate change, for example, seagrass meadows provide coastal communities with a buffer from storms and provide shelter for a variety of marine species. These magnificent meadows can also absorb vast amounts of carbon and are known as a ‘blue carbon’ habitat. This is just one of the examples of where our Blue Marine Foundation funding is headed. Our partnership supports seven projects which span the globe, from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, Kenya to Indonesia. Each project seeks to address the climate and biodiversity crisis in diverse ways, empowering and engaging local communities. View the latest update here. 

Small Actions, Significant Impact 

Efforts in less-discussed locations such as Thailand are equally as important. There, local groups are tirelessly working to restore corals and educate on marine conservation. Thailand has also established several marine protected areas to conserve its coastal and marine biodiversity, and The Thai government has implemented measures to promote sustainable fishing practices and prevent overfishing. We include clear guidance to customers when chartering, including red zones to ensure customers are not impacting marine protected areas 

Making Informed Choices 

Selecting reef-safe sunscreens (see our top tips for sustainable sailing here) is necessary to guarantee healthy reefs that are vital in supporting fish populations and marine habitats. Purchasing goods from local communities supports those who rely on the ocean’s bounty and contributes to the preservation of marine habitats. We also encourage bringing along a reusable water bottle and bag to minimize your waste on charter. 

An Educational Journey 

Our travels should not only be about leisure but also about learning and contributing to ocean preservation. Seek out experiences that offer insights into the marine environment and contribute to conservation efforts. Education is a powerful tool in the fight to protect our oceans.  
 
We encourage observing sea life from a distance so as not to interfere with their natural behaviors. Refrain from feeding or swimming with animals, and if you see any change in the animal’s behavior, please act cautiously. When snorkeling and exploring the underwater world, be sure to enjoy corals, shells, and marine life without touching them, and do this from a distance. 

Ocean warming poses a grave threat to marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs, through a phenomenon known as coral bleaching. As sea temperatures rise due to climate change, corals expel the symbiotic algae living within their tissues, causing them to turn white and leaving them vulnerable to starvation and disease. This not only disrupts the intricate balance of life within reef ecosystems but also deprives countless marine species of their habitats and food sources, ultimately jeopardizing the biodiversity and resilience of our oceans.  
 
In addition to the direct impacts of ocean warming, human activities such as snorkeling can also exacerbate the stress on coral reefs. It’s imperative to make use of proper cleaning equipment for your snorkel and mask to prevent cross-contamination between reefs. Even a small amount of foreign contaminants carried on snorkel gear, such as invasive species or harmful pathogens, can further weaken already fragile reef ecosystems, highlighting the critical role that responsible tourism practices play in safeguarding the health and longevity of our marine environments. 

This World Ocean Day let’s commit ourselves to not just enjoying the sea but also to making informed and responsible decisions to protect it. The health of our oceans is at stake, and the time to act is now. By taking these steps, we ensure that the beauty and diversity of marine life can be sustained for the future.

April 22, 2024 – Earth Day! It’s a special day for us to enjoy the amazing places we sail to and to make sure we keep them beautiful. Whether it’s the quiet beaches or lively islands full of different animals and plants, our trips are all about creating memories that last forever. Read more on Our Ocean Promise. 

This Earth Day, we invite you to join us in sailing in a way that shows love and respect for nature. Here’s how we can all make a significant difference:  

Enjoy the Wind  

Choose sailing over motoring as much as you can. When you let the wind guide your journey, you help keep the air and water clean. It’s a quiet, peaceful way to travel that can also lead to exciting wildlife sightings. Swap the loud engines for the calm of rowing a kayak or balancing on a paddleboard. It’s fun and gentle on the ocean. Read more on our Top Tips for eco-friendly sailing. 

Anchor with intention 

When it’s time to anchor, think of it as parking in someone else’s home. You’d want to be careful, right? The same goes for the sea. Avoid dropping anchor on corals, reefs, or in seagrass areas, because these marine habitats are where fish, and other organisms, have their homes and food. Instead, find sandy or muddy spots that are not only safer for your boat but also won’t hurt the sea life. 

Photographs and Footprints  

Imagine if every visitor took something from the beach – there’d be nothing left! So, we encourage you to fill your camera with pictures and your heart with memories but leave the shells and sand where they are. Watch the wonderful sea creatures from a distance, and always remember: our fun should never scare or harm them.  

Leave Beaches Better Than You Found Them  

We all love a clean beach, don’t we? Make it a game to leave the beach even cleaner than when you arrived. Pick up not just your trash but any litter you find. This way, we make sure beaches stay nice for everyone – people and animals alike.  

Smart Use of Resources  

Think of the boat as a small world where every bit of power and every drop of water is precious. Turn off lights when you don’t need them. Enjoy the breeze instead of using air conditioning. Use water sparingly by taking small actions such as showering on land where possible or closing the tap while brushing your teeth. These small steps are part of a bigger journey towards taking better care of our planet.  

Local Tastes, Global Benefits  

Here’s a fun challenge: try only eating foods bought from the area you’re sailing in. This helps local farmers and fishers and cuts down on pollution from shipping food from far away. Plus, local foods are fresher – they taste better and are better for you.  

Eco-friendly Choices  

From the soap you use to wash your hands to the lotion you put on your skin; every product has a story. Choose items that are friendly to the environment so that story is a good one. This way, you help keep the water clean for all the beautiful corals and fish.  

Conserve Onboard  

Being on a boat is a wonderful time to remember how we can live well without using a lot of energy. Let the sun dry your hair, and at night, watch the stars instead of turning on the TV. When you use less, you get to enjoy the natural world more – and help it stay beautiful.  

Respectful Fishing  

If you’re fishing, go for fish that are common and not at risk of being overfished. Be gentle and quick to release fish that aren’t meant to be caught, so they can keep living in the ocean and keep the ecosystem healthy.  

On this Earth Day, let’s make a promise to take care of the wonderful places we visit on our sails. If we all do our part, these places will stay beautiful and healthy for many more people to enjoy in the future.

Wander the Dubrovnik Old Town city walls 

You can’t visit Dubrovnik without wandering through its intricately spectacular system of forts, bastions, and iconic stone towers. With fortification going back to as early as the Middle Ages, the Dubrovnik City Walls stand as a testament to Dubrovnik’s nickname – “the unconquerable city”, as the walls have never been breached.  

Withstanding several earthquakes and bombardment by the British, Austrian, and Yugoslavian forces, the walls today still enclose Dubrovnik’s historic centre, and it is possible to walk along them to enjoy the best views of the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ and the surrounding lush green islands. Dubrovnik’s Baroque churches, monasteries, and palaces; its Renaissance fountains and facades, are all intertwined with gleaming wide marble-paved squares, steep cobbled streets, and houses, all of which have also remained unchanged for centuries. 

Cable car trip for the best view of Dubrovnik 

The Dubrovnik Cable Car has been taking travellers up to the top of Mount Srd since 1969. In just four short minutes, you’ll reach the peak and be treated to breathtaking views of Dubrovnik, the Adriatic Sea and more. At the top, check out the fortress, dine with a view and exceptionally stunning at sunset. For the best value, choose a tour that combines the cable car, Old Town walking tour and the Dubrovnik City Walls. 

Kayak around Dubrovnik’s coastline at Sunset and paddle further afield 

The azure blue, millpond-esque waters of the Adriatic Sea offer the perfect paddling ground for kayaking, and you don’t have to be limited to kayaking around the mysterious island of Lokrum either. Sunsail vacations offer optional extras such as kayaks and stand-up paddle boards on your yacht charter, so you can take them around the Elaphiti Islands to use at your leisure and most importantly, on your schedule. 

Once you’ve had your fill of exploring the mesmerizing blue cave of Lokrum, had a picnic on the hidden beach of Betina, and skirted around the towering citadel-studded coastline at Sunset, we’d recommend anchoring in Koločep Island to take your kayak out for a spin on its crystalline waters to discover a myriad of secret coves and blue caves.  

Koločep Blue Cave 

Koločep is one of the most picturesque islands of the Elaphite archipelago. Here you can enjoy magical diving in four connected underwater shallow caves with high ceilings and sandy and gravelly bottoms at a depth of about 12 meters. Also, it is possible to enter by swimming. 

Snorkel in Šipan and soak up the history 

After you’ve seen the vibrant peacocks and blue caves of Lokrum just 10 minutes off the coast of Dubrovnik, head towards the turquoise blue shores of Šipan. A 45-minute journey on the water takes you to the picturesque harbor of Suđurađ on the east coast Šipan, where you’ll find translucent bays filled with sea urchins, fish, and coral shells that are great for an afternoon of snorkelling. 

Known for its famous local wine made from Plavac Mali grapes, this island is dotted with quaint fishing villages and fortified castles to explore. Amid its cypress trees, olive groves, and sun-kissed vineyards, Šipan was once a firm favorite with the Dubrovnik aristocracy who built several forts and housing in the mid-15th Century and was even inhabited by the Romans. While you’re there, visit Sipanska Luka, to see relics from the former glory days of Ragusa (Dubrovnik Republic) and a scattering of ancient Roman ruins. We’d recommend in particular seeing the striking Magistrates Palace and remains of St Peter’s Church.  

Head to Lopud for the beaches 

Noted for its handful of blissfully white sandy beaches, Lopud is said to be one of the most eye-catching settlements of all the Elaphiti’s. Approximately 1 hour away from Dubrovnik by boat, the developed island of Lopud is blessed with exotic gardens and dotted with ruined fortresses. A beautiful 30-m high bell tower of a Franciscan Monastery can also be spotted as soon as you cruise into the quay at Lopud Harbour. 

The best way to spend your time in car-free Lopud, would be to stumble on clusters of ruins, monasteries, and 17th-century churches then stopping for lunch at Obala, for local white fish marinated with citrus fruits and carpaccio octopus that overlooks Lopud’s waterfront. But no trip to Lopud is complete without heading to one of Croatia’s most prime beach spots – Šunj beach. Located on the south side of the island, Šunj’s warm crystalline shallow waters, make it a perfect way for families and couples to spend an afternoon winding down surrounded by lush forests that give it a more secluded feel. 

Explore Korčula 

Like most of Croatia, Korčula is brimming with natural beauty. But Korčula is also home to a spectacular wine culture, a stunning old city, a collection of hidden beaches, endless olive groves, quaint cobblestone streets, boutique shops, restaurant-lined alleyways, and some unique dining specialties. 

Lovers of old architecture have plenty to see on Korcula Island, especially in its main town, where the Old Towns’ system of ramparts is very well preserved. Its entrance from the south – Land Gate, is worth seeing as well as the magnificent St. Mark’s Cathedral. Korcula is also allegedly the birthplace of the famous Marco Polo.  

Drink wine in Lumbarda 

Lumbarda is a small fishermen’s village located on the eastern end of the Island of Korčula, few kilometres away from the town of Korcula, in Croatia. A road passing through a picturesque area of pine woods and olive groves connects these two places. The village is surrounded by sandy vineyards with well-known white wine ‘Grk’ produced from the local grape. 

Sandy beaches Vela Przina, Bilin Zal and Tatinja are among the most popular in the area. The village is also a tourist centre. Most of its 1200 inhabitants are wine-growers, fishermen and stonemasons, actively participating in the local tourist industry. Lumbarda provides an ideal location for a traditional seaside Mediterranean holiday. 

Visit Mljet National Park 

Mljet National Park is a beautiful park covering the majority of the northwest part of Mljet Island in Croatia. Although mostly known for its two picturesque saltwater lakes, Mljet National Park has plenty to offer, including exploring its lakeside paths by bike, hiking, and cave exploring. 
 
This is a great day-stop on your charter, take a hike or rent an e-bike to get around. Enjoy plenty of swim and photo stops, floating in the salty lake, and take a picnic along for the ultimate excursion. 

Enjoy Okuklje 

Okuklje is a village on the northern shore of the island of Mljet. This beautiful little bay is a popular summer destination for visitors to Mljet. The bay is also a popular anchorage spot for sailors as a safe haven (in case of bad weather) on their way along the coast to Dubrovnik.  

Facing Croatian Mainland, this relaxed seaside small and quiet village offers several holiday houses and apartments, a couple of restaurants, cafes, and a lot of good swimming spots to enjoy the clear waters. The hills around the bay are excellent hiking locations offering great views over the channel.

New Moorings Market

Years in the making, the newly opened Moorings Market is your one-stop shop for all your provisioning needs. The Moorings offers a convenient online shopping experience, whereby guests can pre-order their food and beverages ahead of their charter and our staff will deliver the groceries directly to your yacht. However, for those who enjoy a more hands-on shopping experience or need to pick up a few last-minute items, this new on-site supermarket has everything on your list including fresh fruits and vegetables, deli meats, baked goods, essentials such as sunscreen and cleaning supplies, and an extensive selection of wine and spirits.

New and Improved Watersports Shop

Sail Caribbean Divers is a longstanding partner of The Moorings, and past guests will recall their signature kiosk located down our docks across from the main pool & restaurant. Now, we are pleased to announce that Sail Caribbean Divers has relocated to the large conference space adjacent to the front desk, offering a convenient location to peruse last-minute watersports items to ensure guests make the most of their time on (and under) the water.

Charlie’s Restaurant Reopen

After a brief hiatus, Charlie’s Restaurant, which bears the name of the beloved co-founder of The Moorings, has now reopened. With a new Head Chef, revamped menu and full bar, this waterfront restaurant is the ideal place to unwind and enjoy a refreshing drink after a long day of travel. In addition to Ginny’s corner coffee shop and a poolside restaurant, there is no shortage of dining options throughout the marina.

Shopping & Relaxation

While the ultimate goal is to set sail and enjoy the many wonders of the British Virgin Islands, there is plenty to do and see throughout the marina before, or after your charter. From the Amara Spa, to the Art Studio, Gift Shop, Hiho Apparel shop, poolside bar & restaurant, and on-site hotel, the newly renamed Moorings Yacht Club has it all.

A Rejuvenated Fleet

The Moorings continued to invest in our charter fleet through the difficult shutdowns during Covid. Now, we are proud to feature a completely rejuvenated fleet of yachts ready to host our guests once more. Our Sailing catamaran fleet is now predominantly comprised of new yachts such as the Moorings 4200, the larger Moorings 4500 and Moorings 4600 and flagship Moorings 5000, each of which won the prestigious “Boat of the Year” honors upon launch. Our Power catamaran fleet has been similarly upgraded, now featuring 3 distinct yacht types to accommodate groups of all sizes, from the 3-cabin Moorings 403PC, to the 4-cabin 464PC, and the larger 534PC, all offering unmatched design and performance. The Moorings also continues to invest in the monohull fleet, with up to 12 brand-new yachts of varying sizes scheduled for delivery this fall.

American Airlines launched a new non-stop flight service from Miami to Beef Island, Tortola, in 2023 making it easier than ever to get to this beloved charter destination.
