Captain Glenn Shephard just completed his first-ever charter with The Moorings in the British Virgin Islands, and first as Brand Ambassador. We sat down with him after the trip to see, from his perspective, how a sailing charter in the BVI compares to the extensive list of destinations he has sailed. 

Now that you’ve just completed your inaugural charter with The Moorings in the British Virgin Islands, where would you place the BVI in the hierarchy of sailing destinations you’ve visited worldwide? 

The British Virgin Islands are probably the best place in the world for a tropical sailing holiday. One could easily spend a month or two experiencing all it has to offer, but you can hit almost all the hot spots easily on a one-week trip. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the BVI quite a few times, many times while working on Superyachts, a couple times on catamarans and once on my first little sailboat, a 34 sloop. I think most sailors dream of cruising the islands of the Caribbean, and it’s generally accepted that the BVI represents the best sailing experience in the Caribbean, with lots of diverse anchorages and marinas within easy reach of each other in a well-protected cruising ground featuring steady trade wind sailing and crystal-clear turquoise waters.

What were your favourite anchorages, and why? 

It’s impossible to name a favourite when there are so many to choose from, but I consider these “must-sees”: Cooper Island, The Baths (probably the coolest beach on the planet) of course The North Sound and Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda, The Settlement on Anegada, the idyllic Sandy Spit, The Bight on Norman Island (and the infamous Willie T’s)  and my all-time favourite White Bay on Jost Van Dyke with the iconic Soggy Dollar Bar, a “must see” if there ever was one. But I can easily think of ten more spots without even trying. 

Any tips you would recommend for someone considering a charter in the BVI? 

Bring plenty of sunscreen, a wide brim hat, a long sleeve rash guard or two. Definitely bring an action camera to capture the amazing world beneath the waves. Leave your cares at home, be flexible with your planning, and if you haven’t already, give a catamaran a go, I promise you won’t regret it. Lastly, go easy on the Painkillers. They are heaven in a cup, but they might sneak up on you! 

We sailed aboard a 42’, 3-cabin, Moorings 4200 sailing catamaran. During the trip you mentioned how you actually don’t have much experience sailing catamarans. What was your overall takeaway from sailing a Moorings cat for a week? 

I’ve been a monohull sailor all my days but there is no doubt that Catamarans are all the rage nowadays. It’s easy to see why: tons of space to hang out and relax inside and out and no heeling, which is especially nice if you have new sailors onboard. You can’t beat the comfort and spaciousness.  

I was blown away by the Moorings 4200 we had. She sailed really well, easily hitting 8-9 knots, and I was very impressed with how easily she tacked and built speed again on the new course. She was surprisingly capable upwind and glided effortlessly downwind with the big mainsail out on one side and the Genoa goose winged out on the other. 

But the highlight had to be the enormous owners suite that I enjoyed, taking up the entire starboard hull, with a massive walk-in shower and head compartment all the way forward and the full size bed at the back with tons of storage throughout, it felt more like a superyacht guest cabin than what I’m more accustomed to. 

We weren’t sure what to expect, but it turned out that everyone in the BVI recognized you from the show. What was that like for you? Do you experience that often? 

I spend most of my time in Europe so I usually only get recognised once every week or two, a bit more so around marinas, naturally. But meeting and being recognised by so many sailors in the BVI was a bit of a Rock Star experience, great for the ego, it’s something I’ve only really experienced at events like BravoCon or at Boat Shows like Miami or Annapolis. 

I really enjoy interacting with fans of the show, especially fellow sailors who really have that first-hand knowledge of why we all love the sea. 

Any final thoughts on your first charter with The Moorings? Did it live up to expectations? Is there anything that jumped out to you as to why you would recommend chartering with The Moorings vs. someone else? 

The trip exceeded all my expectations. The Moorings base was conveniently located and had all the amenities anyone could ever dream of, the staff were friendly and welcoming, the handover walkthrough was spot on and instilled confidence, the boat was in perfect condition and well stocked with everything one would need for a great sailing holiday. 

I’ve been on a few charter trips with other companies and while still fun, sadly they didn’t always live up to exceptions, too many problems with equipment and systems, and a lack of follow-up support once you leave the marina. I think that’s why The Moorings remains the leader in this field. We had a small issue with a shower drain, for example, and a technician was onboard and had the problem fixed quite literally within an hour of our call, and we were back on our way. The Moorings would always be my number one choice, and I’m not just saying that because I’m now part of the team. I can’t wait until the next trip!

In June 2025, 6/18-6/23, we had the pleasure to sail out of BVI Moorings with Capt Romano and Silvia. This was our 4th sailing with the Moorings and sailing in BVI, our second c=fully chartered – the only way to go 
 
Capt Romano is a very capable sailor and captain – it’s obvious he enjoys sailing and what he does. He runs a tight ship, and I like it that way. It’s so easy to get injured in so many ways aboard a vessel, specially a multi deck sailing yacht. Capt R always keeps an eye out for hidden danger or careless passengers/guests. An injury can instantly turn a dream vacation into a nightmare – for all.
 
On this sailing, we were extremely fortunate in that the weather and winds fully cooperated – blue skies and gentle breezes accompanied the entire trip….and Capt R put those sails to work, which made for an added experience – truly priceless! As previously mentioned, we’ve sailed the BVI islands on several occasions; HOWEVER, Capt R managed to show us areas of BVI we had not visited or even knew existed. Every morning we’d find ourselves waiting to a serene bay, surrounded by amazing vistas – the best part, we had it
ALL to ourselves with no other boat in sight.
 
Capt Romano’s skills and knowledge of the islands in BVI make for a wonderful trip! He takes pride in showing his guests the best of BVI and the many secluded beaches/bays that it has to offer – and his “pain killers” are the best!
 
Our chef was Silvia. She and the Capt. made a great team, which contributed to a great experience. Silvia is a good cook and takes pride in her dishes. I’m a meat and potatoes guy. However, due to some miscommunication we ended up with a different menu. In the end, it worked out great! Her meals were very tasty with more of a Mediterranean flare – which my crew enjoyed, especially my wife! Side note, we almost did not make it to this trip-my wife was battling pancreatic cancer. However, she finished her treatment just in time and her doctors gave her the green light to travel. Silvia’s healthy Mediterranean did wonders for my wife – she’s very limited as to what she can eat and what doesn’t upset her stomach.
 
Cons
The Moorings needs to “refresh” the rooms in their hotel. True, they have had poor luck with the hurricanes. However, if others were able to rebuild/refresh so can they. While we’re at – make sure to visit Bitter End Yacht Club-they’ve done an awesome job rebuilding.

Editor’s note: Our charter guest Mike Strickland recently submitted the following blog, recounting his “Royal Holiday” to the Seychelles on a Moorings 4800.

The Seychelles are a collection of 115 islands about 1,000 miles off the coast of Kenya. You have likely seen beautiful pictures of granite boulders on the beaches of some of the 42 granitic islands. With a week of sailing, you can visit the key islands, with an itinerary that comes within 20 miles of where Prince William and Kate Middleton honeymooned. And after some long flights to get there, you might as well do a pre or post sail safari in Kenya, where you can come close to where this royal couple got engaged. Thus, the “Royal Holiday”!

Navigation is straightforward but I brought my 78sc Garmin again for anchorage locations, watching the tracks after anchoring, and anchor watch.

Beau Vallon: great stop with SE winds.  We stayed at the basic Berjaya hotel pre-sail where we arranged with Dive Seychelles to rendezvous with us at 2p for Coral Garden dive and snorkeling – L’ilot also recommended if visibility is good. For dinner, Baobab Pizzeria is recommended on the L side of the bay – get the Garlic Bread with Cheese & Oregano appetizer!

TIP: Our USA cellphones roamed to AirTel but with mixed results. The boat wifi bandwidth was variable from under 1 Mbps to 30 Mbps. Phone numbers are +248, then 2 if cell or 4 if landline plus 6 digits. I recommend getting a local SIM before your trip or at the airport.

Anse Lazio: the beautiful beach.  Land your dinghy to the R passing between two rocks, to avoid waves crashing on the beach.  Garbage drop ashore.  Day trip to anchor off beautiful Anse Georgette before returning for the 2nd night – six crew went to Lemuria resort by dinghy to enjoy excellent golf and to grab a cab to a supermarket for ice/bread before we returned to Anse Lazio.  Visit Cousin bird sanctuary on weekdays.

Anse Petite Cour: 9 a.m. visit to Curieuse to see the giant tortoises, park pass allows for snorkeling at nearby Saint Pierre – anchored in 30 ft over sand off of Anse San Jose and it is a 45-minute moderate hike to the tortoises. At 2 p.m., a 2-hour van w/Praslin Tours (2 543 707) to visit Valle du Mai in 1 hour, and then dinner is recommended at the Paradise Sun restaurant.

TIP: coordinate with Le Domaine de la Reserve front desk for beach access.  They were o.k. for us to pass through to grab our van if we had a round of drinks by the pool – they make a great margarita.  Or bring your dinghy ashore to the west on Anse Possession.

Coco Islands and Grand Soeur: 7 a.m. start to snorkel Coco Islands at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. stop at Grande Soeur’s beautiful beaches (weekdays), and on to med moor at La Digue harbor if you are early and lucky, or you will drop anchor outside the harbor.

TIP: Ricky helped us with our stern lines for med mooring as we arrived and got us basic bicycles for an afternoon and the next day for SCR 200 (usually ~ 160 SCR/day for medium quality bikes).

La Digue: Great dinner at Le Nautique our first night – the Fish Trio was excellent.  The next day we rented some bicycles and paid the 115 SCR fee to enter L’Union Estate Farm to get to incredible Anse Source d’Argent and the Fruita Cabana Bar.  Grand Anse Beach also worth checking out.  Snorkeled Anse Severe to look for the hawksbill turtles.

Saint-Anne Island: anchored for the night off the west coast in SE winds. For NW winds, if you anchor off Anse Cimetière with calm seas, contact JA Resorts for an upscale dining experience.

TIP: We used O’quay shop provisioning (248 2 811 220 WhatsApp) in addition to The Moorings provisioning to get yoghurt, wide cheese selection, and some chocolates/desserts. Contact them a few days in advance to confirm delivery. We also used Ocean Blue Travel for several on-time transfers.  Post sail we enjoyed the Fisherman’s Cove Resort.

We did our safari pre-sail, staying at the Elewana Lewa Safari Camp for 3 days and at the Mara Serena Safari Lodge for 2 days in late August, which usually coincides with the annual wildebeest migration through Masai Mara. The Elewana Lewa Safari Camp is higher end, and worth it, with outstanding service, beautiful location, relaxed game drives, and only 13 tented bedrooms.

In Masai Mara, we saw huge numbers of wildebeest and zebra, and also enjoyed seeing a large number of hippos in the Masai Mara river – the Mara Serena Lodge was busy on Sunday, but more enjoyable and relaxed on Monday. While we saw the “Big 5” in Lewa, there are few hippos there.

Our 4 Millennials recommend Elewana Lewa if you only have 3 days – more relaxed, great service, and closer to animals vs Masai Mara where 4 by 4’s need to stay on roads in “High Use” areas. We stayed at the Nairobi Serena hotel pre and post safari – nice rooms, great breakfast, and they will store your sailing luggage while you are on safari. 

The “Royal Holiday” combo is top 3 of the over a dozen sailing trips which we have taken.  Go in early October for calmer winds.  For lower cost but with higher risk of rain in Kenya, go in late May. You will get better at snorkeling when there are calmer winds.  Bring good quality binoculars and cameras for safari – my son Chris took the lion, leopard cub, and bird shots with an expensive telephoto lens.

TIP: You can save up to $1K per person if you directly book your safari camp and flights within Kenya. Ask your Nairobi hotel to book international airport transfers.  For other transfers, I used the cheaper and sometimes late Perfect Wilderness Tours (WhatsApp +254 723 441764). &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp in Masai Mara is another option for an authentic “tent” experience versus the Mara Serena Safari Lodge hotel room. There are a few nonstop Nairobi to Seychelles flights each week.  Also, Safarilink is a reasonable option for custom flights if you have a larger group.

Half of all Brits are too scared to admit suffering from stress and anxiety, despite increased awareness of mental health issues, a study shows.

They fear it will damage their career prospects and affect the way people treat them, according to a new study commissioned by luxury yacht charter company, The Moorings.

The average Brit takes three days off work a year because of stress, with those in London taking twice that.

More than one in four of 2,000 adults polled are worries about finances as they look towards 2020, with a similar amount stressed over getting older.

Commenting on the research, Jodie Kidd, model, TV personality and race car driver, says, “Having grown up in the Caribbean and now living on the coast of the British Isles in Sussex, everything important to me is in and around the water. Yachting has always been in my family, my family started power boat racing on the Isle of Wight and I love swimming, surfing, diving and sailing – I once joined Alex Thomson for an afternoon of racing in the Solent and even go to race with Ellen MacArthur!

Originating in surf therapy, Ocean Therapy applies to any ocean health and fitness activity including sailing. It relates to the psychological benefit of spending time learning new skills in blue space, achieving something called ‘flow state’. According to experts, when we’re able to achieve this flow state, our internal chatter quiets and we can be fully present and immersed in the current moment, helping us to feel calmer and less stressed. The respondents highlighted their favourite forms of relaxation, with Ocean Therapy – the link between calmness and the sea – coming out at the forefront.“I suffered from anxiety through most of my modelling career which is the reason why I gave it up. The first thing I did after leaving modelling was to go back to the Caribbean and get into the water. The ocean is like a second home to me and I feel a great sense of wellbeing when I am near the water. It helps me find balance and contentment in our increasingly hectic lives and I really recommend spending time on the water to anyone looking to positively change their mindset.”

Despite plenty of wellbeing advice being freely available, our lives seem to be getting busier and more stressful every day – and two thirds (66%) of Brits agree that slowing down and taking a step back makes them feel less stressed. Whilst being a fairly recently recognised form of stress relief, Ocean Therapy and ‘blue mind’ have found themselves becoming recommended remedies for veterans suffering from PTSD, and studies are proving time and time again there’s a clear use for this form of therapy when it comes to mental health.

People surveyed admitted they felt calmest listening to the sound of the ocean, with over half (52%) rating the sound of waves as the most relaxing. Birds chirping (39%) and rain (29%) also ranked highly.

Some of the most common ways to cope with stress are to go for a walk (35%) and listen to music (32%). Almost half say reading a good book makes them feel relaxed, followed by spending time in nature, enjoying a bath and watching a movie. However, a huge 72% agreed that holidays provide the best opportunity to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life. When asked where they feel the most relaxed 1 in 5 Brits (20%) pick the beach.
